Are You Too Dependent on
Google
Adwords For Traffic?
Google Adwords, Yahoo Search Marketing and Microsoft Ad Center (MSN) are excellent sources of quality traffic to your web sites.
The main advantages are:
- You can get virtually instant, targeted traffic
- You can direct visitors to your most targeted landing pages
- You have full control of the timing and cost of your traffic flow
- You decide the exact keyword phrases for your target market
- You can quickly split test ads and landing pages to optimize your conversion rates
- You don't have to wait weeks or months to get your pages indexed, with no guarantee you will appear in the top 1000 search results, much less the coveted top 10
- You don't have the frustration of seeing your traffic (and your sales) grind to a screeching halt when your rankings mysteriously fall like a rock
Those are great reasons to continue to use Google Adwords.
But I am seeing people spend thousands of dollars a month on PPC advertising while making absolutely no effort to improve their organic search engine rankings.
Here is the #1 reason why that is a bad idea.
75-80% of internet searchers click only on the free organic listings, not sponsored links.
Did that get your attention?
It gets mine!
So does this:
Google Organic Clickthrough Rate Stats
# 1 Spot in Google gets 42.3 % of all clickthroughs
# 2 Spot in Google gets 11.92 % of all clickthroughs
# 3 Spot in Google gets 8.44 % of all clickthroughs
# 4 Spot in Google gets 6.03 % of all clickthoughs
# 5 Spot in Google gets 4.86 % of all clickthoughs
# 6 Spot in Google gets 3.99 % of all clickthoughs
Wow! If you don't have a top listing you are just fighting for the scraps.
And if you are not even on the first page you don't have a prayer of getting significant free traffic to your site.
Look very closely. A #1 position garners nearly 10 times as much free traffic as a 5-6 position and nearly 4 times as much as a #2.
How much would a #1, or even a top 10, position for your major keywords be worth to you? It could be the difference between feast or famine, especially in this economy.
Perhaps you have heard that it is too hard to get top 10 rankings. Well, in some very competitive markets, that is certainly true. It would take a massive amount time and money to crack the top 10 for some highly competitive keywords.
But that is definitely not the case for all markets and keywords.
How about your niche markets and keywords?
Can you bust into the top 10 organic listings so you can get your fair share of the 80% of searchers that won't even click on a sponsored link?
Would you like to build a stable, long term business that is not 100% dependent on PPC traffic? You know, the kind of traffic where 95% or more of your advertising dollars go down the drain in 5 seconds.
Improving your search engine rankings is actually pretty simple, in theory.
First you need to make sure your site is search engine friendly. There are easy steps you can quickly learn that will make a big difference, such as optimizing your page titles (appears above the browser window). That's the #1 on-page factor that search engines use to determine ranking placement.
But that is not enough these days. You will also need to get links to your site from other relevant, high ranking sites, preferably with your important keywords in the hyperlink anchor text.
Now that's the trick isn't it? Have you ever asked or begged for a link to your site?
It's not fun. In fact, it is such a pain that hardly anyone does it. That's what separates the people that consistently rank high from the ones that don't. They know how to get valuable, long term links. And they make the effort to do it!
Depending on your market competitiveness, I highly recommend that you allocate part (perhaps 10% initially) of your annual PPC advertising budget to optimizing your organic search engine rankings for the long term.
For instance, if you are now spending $30,000 a year on Adwords ($2500/mo), take $3000 to start a link building campaign so you can reduce your dependence on Adwords, lower your average cost per action and build up your business for the long term. Just think how much easier it would be to survive these tough economic times if you were not paying for every visitor to your site.
I am putting together some SEO (search engine optimization) packages that will get you permanent (no recurring monthly fees like those paid links that can get you banned) one-way links from high ranking, authoritative sites that should significantly boost your rankings for your most important keywords.
This is strictly white hat. You will not be penalized for the black hat schemes and tactics used by others.
In fact, I will be providing free, high quality content in most cases to these sites in exchange for links (including your keywords from a relevant, on-topic page) back to your site. Google loves the content too. They index new pages on these sites several times a day.
Of course, this is not easy otherwise your competitors would be doing it too. Well, maybe they are which means you better get started right away before your get even further behind.
Also, it is not necessarily cheap. It is a lot of work if it is done correctly. Packages will start in the $1250-3000 range. In some markets, that may do the trick. In more competitive markets, you may need to follow up with a monthly plan in order to dominate certain keyword phrases.
Just as in my Adwords management business, one plan does not fit all. I will customize an SEO plan of attack based on your unique market and goals.
Give me a call to learn how (and if) I can build permanent, one-way links to your site to boost your organic search engine rankings.
